The fake Linkt toll text: part of a global campaign hitting 12 countries

"LINKT Reminder: You have an unpaid toll notice overdue for over 30 days. Please arrange payment immediately to avoid E-tag cancellation." Security firm Bitdefender identified more than 2,200 malicious shortened links spoofing Linkt's sender name — part of a wider wave of over 79,000 fake toll texts sent across 40 campaigns since December 2025, targeting Australia and eleven other countries.

What Linkt actually says: Linkt has officially removed clickable links from its SMS messages entirely. If a text claiming to be from Linkt contains a link — even one that looks like linkt.com.au — it's a scam.

How the fake Linkt text works

Step 1

The overdue toll

A small, plausible-sounding overdue toll amount, "outstanding for over 30 days" — vague enough to apply to almost anyone who drives on a toll road.

Step 2

The E-tag threat

"Avoid E-tag cancellation" or "your account has been suspended due to a failed auto top-up" — both designed to trigger immediate action.

Step 3

The near-identical domain

The link opens a page that looks identical to linkt.com.au but lives on a lookalike domain, often one letter or character off.

Step 4

The theft

The "payment" page doesn't process anything — it captures your card number, expiry and CVV for resale or immediate fraud.

How to spot it

What to do if you get this text

  1. Don't click, don't enter any card details.
  2. Check the real way: log into your account directly at linkt.com.au, typed manually, or via the official Linkt app.
  3. Report it to Linkt's official scam alerts page and to Scamwatch.
  4. If you already paid, contact your bank or card issuer immediately to block the card and dispute the charge.

Egidio: your automatic phishing detector

These campaigns work at massive scale precisely because a lookalike domain is hard to catch by eye. Egidio catches the fake link before it can do anything.

Egidio screens incoming calls and scans links arriving through your messaging apps in real time. When it recognises a fake toll-payment page, it blocks it before it loads.
