Why this setting exists
WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger and other messaging apps are closed apps: no other app, including Egidio, can see their content directly. Android created a single official mechanism to work around this barrier in a controlled way: notification access. It's the same door that every app of this kind — anti-theft, smartwatches, assistants — uses to know what's shown on screen.
What Egidio does with this access
✓ What Egidio does
- Reads the notification text the moment it arrives
- Analyses it instantly, on your phone
- Alerts you if the content looks like a scam
- Forgets the notification once analysed
✗ What Egidio never does
- Log into your WhatsApp or Telegram account
- Read your conversation history
- Send the content to a server
- Keep or store your messages
Why Android shows a warning
When you turn on this setting, your phone shows a serious-sounding message like "this app will be able to read all your notifications". That's normal: Android shows this warning for every app that requests this access, without exception — it's generic system wording, not a signal specific to Egidio.
How to turn on this setting
From Egidio: Settings → Egidio Messaging → follow the explanation screen → your phone opens its "Notification access" setting → look for Egidio in the list and turn it on → confirm. The full step-by-step guide, with screen mockups: How to turn on WhatsApp protection →
Can I turn it off later?
Yes, anytime, from Settings → Egidio Messaging, or directly in your phone's "Notification access" settings. Messaging protection stops immediately; calls and texts remain protected as normal.
Frequently asked questions
What does the "notification access" setting do?
It's the official Android mechanism that lets Egidio analyse notifications locally, without touching the content of the apps themselves.
Can Egidio read my full conversations?
No. Egidio only sees what appears in the notification the moment it arrives — not the history, not your account.
Is this data sent to a server?
No. Analysis happens entirely on your phone.
Why does Android show a warning?
It's a generic warning shown for every app requesting this access, not a signal specific to Egidio.
Can I turn off this access later?
Yes, anytime from Settings → Egidio Messaging or Android's settings.
