US water and energy: the federal advisory on Iran-linked hackers
The FBI, NSA, CISA and Department of Energy
issued a joint advisory on July 23, 2026: industrial controllers operating water
and energy networks were remotely manipulated, across at least
twelve US states. This isn't a data leak — it's an intrusion into
physical equipment.

The FBI, NSA, CISA and Department of Energy issue a joint
advisory: Iran-linked hackers are targeting internet-connected programmable
logic controllers (PLCs) in water and energy operational networks, on Rockwell,
Schneider Electric and Siemens equipment. The advisory states the goal is to
"cause disruptive effects within the United States," in the context of the
ongoing Iran-Israel-US conflict.

Several Minnesota communities, including Braham and Maple
Plain, report malfunctions on their water systems. A brief state of emergency is
declared, then lifted after confirmation that the immediate threat to public
health and safety had been addressed. Over 30 Minnesota communities are

that US agencies are "confident" the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is
responsible, while not certain of the specific unit involved. A more detailed
public attribution has not been issued at the time of writing.
⚙️The technical mechanism, as documented
Per the federal advisory, the hackers altered controller programming logic to
disable critical shutdown and alarm processes, allowing systems to enter unsafe
conditions without notifying operators. The FBI states that some attacks caused
loss of pressure in water systems, which could allow untreated groundwater to
infiltrate pipes, along with flooding. This is not a data theft: it's a takeover
of physical equipment.
