The framework, in one paragraph
Australia's Scams Prevention Framework Act 2025 places new legal obligations on banks, telcos and digital platforms. AFCA gains general scam-complaint jurisdiction from 1 July 2026, but the Framework's full compliance obligations for those businesses only land on 31 March 2027. Until then, there is no fixed statutory reimbursement cap the way the UK's mandatory scheme already works: each bank decides reimbursement case-by-case. We cover the legal mechanics in full on our dedicated Scams Prevention Framework page. What this page covers instead: what each individual bank and telco actually does today, beyond what the law currently requires.
What each bank actually offers
What your mobile network already blocks
Every major Australian telco now runs scam-call and scam-text filtering by default: Telstra's Cleaner Pipes SMS scam filter blocks malicious texts before they reach your phone, Optus runs its own network-level Scam Block, and TPG/Vodafone has deployed its own call-screening technology against fraudulent traffic. Collectively, under ACMA's industry code, Australian carriers have blocked over 2.3 billion scam calls and 857.4 million scam SMS since the code's reporting period began. From 1 July 2026, the ACMA's mandatory SMS Sender ID Register requires every organisation using a sender ID to register it, so unregistered senders are labelled "unverified" on your phone. None of this reaches WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger or any other messaging app: network-level filtering stops at the call and SMS layer.
| Organisation | Product or scheme | Displayed price | Coverage / limit | What's excluded or not covered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scams Prevention Framework | Statutory scam obligations (banks, telcos, digital platforms) | n/a — legal requirement | full obligations from 31 March 2027; AFCA scam-complaint jurisdiction from 1 July 2026 | No fixed reimbursement cap yet, unlike the UK's mandatory scheme; reimbursement today is case-by-case |
| Commonwealth Bank | NameCheck + CallerCheck | n/a — included | flags mismatched payee names; in-app call verification | Prevention aids, not a guarantee — don't themselves change reimbursement outcomes |
| Westpac | Verify / SafeBlock | n/a — included in app | payee-name mismatch alerts; instant account lock | Relies on you noticing and acting on the alert, or suspecting fraud yourself |
| ANZ | Falcon fraud detection | n/a — included | machine-learning transaction monitoring, ~$50m prevented Oct 2025-Mar 2026 | Detects patterns after a transaction is initiated, not before a scam message reaches you |
| Egidio | Detection and blocking | $49.99 AUD/yr | calls and 183+ messaging apps | does not reimburse — acts before the transfer is ever approved |

The maths
One comparison, using the confirmed figures above:
A single solicitor hour vs. Egidio's annual cost
The low end of a typical Australian solicitor's hourly rate, against Egidio's full annual subscription:
$200/hr (solicitor, low end) vs. $49.99/yr for EgidioWhy we do this work
Someone who buys a smoke detector is entitled to more than a plastic box: to know how a fire starts, what to do in the first minutes, and what no device will do for them. That's the minimum owed to someone who trusts you with their safety.
This work — sourcing, verifying, publishing, correcting — is slow and demands discipline. It is within reach of every major player in this space: several are publicly traded companies with resources far beyond ours. If they don't do it, that isn't a question of resources. It's a choice.
At Egidio, the choice has been made. You're entitled to it, so you have it.

Frequently asked questions
Will my Australian bank always reimburse me if I'm scammed?
Not automatically. Unlike the UK's mandatory scheme, Australia doesn't yet have a fixed statutory reimbursement guarantee — the Scams Prevention Framework's full obligations don't apply until 31 March 2027. Until then, reimbursement is decided case-by-case by your bank, with AFCA as the free escalation route for unresolved complaints. See the full breakdown →
What is CBA's NameCheck and CallerCheck?
NameCheck flags when the name on a new payment doesn't match the account it's going to, helping prevent mistaken and scam payments — it has helped over 11,000 CBA customers avoid more than $11 million in mistaken payments since March 2023. CallerCheck lets a CBA staff member send an in-app verification prompt during a call, so you can confirm the call is genuinely from the bank without sharing personal details over the phone.
What is ANZ Falcon?
ANZ Falcon is a machine-learning fraud detection system that analyses transaction patterns to flag suspicious activity personalised to each customer. Between October 2025 and March 2026, ANZ said Falcon prevented approximately $50 million in scam and fraud-related transactions.
Does Egidio replace my bank's fraud protection or my telco's scam filtering?
No. Egidio is not a bank, an insurer, or a reimbursement scheme. It does not process claims and does not replace any protection your bank or telco already provides. It acts upstream — detecting and blocking the scam attempt itself, across calls and 183+ messaging apps — before any payment is even considered.
