The framework, in one paragraph
Since 7 October 2024, UK banks and payment providers have a legal obligation — not a goodwill gesture — to reimburse most victims of Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud, under mandatory rules set by the Payment Systems Regulator. Reimbursement is capped at £85,000 per claim, providers can apply an excess of up to £100, and the decision is due within 5 business days (up to 35 for complex cases). Card payments, cash, cheques and international transfers sit outside this specific scheme. We cover the legal mechanics in full, with the Financial Ombudsman escalation route, on our dedicated APP fraud reimbursement page. What this page covers instead: what each individual bank and network actually does, beyond the baseline the law requires.
What each one actually offers
What your mobile network already blocks
Every major UK network now runs scam-call and scam-text filtering by default: EE's Scam Guard and Call Protect, O2's free spam-call identification, Vodafone's Secure Net flagging, and Three's automatic scam-call filter. Collectively, UK operators blocked 2.7 billion scam text messages, including 97.1 million in January 2026 alone. Ofcom's newest rules commit BT, EE, VodafoneThree and Virgin Media O2 to block spoofed calls — foreign call centres impersonating a UK number — across their networks. None of this reaches WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger or any other messaging app: network-level filtering stops at the call and SMS layer.
| Organisation | Product or scheme | Displayed price | Coverage / limit | What's excluded or not covered |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Payment Systems Regulator | Mandatory APP fraud reimbursement | n/a — legal requirement | up to £85,000, £100 possible excess | Card payments, cash, cheques, international transfers; provider can refuse if you ignored a specific, clear warning |
| Barclays | Online & Mobile Banking Guarantee | n/a — included | reverses unauthorised transactions | Payments you authorised yourself follow the separate APP fraud route, not this guarantee |
| Lloyds | Scam Check (AI purchase screening) | n/a — included in app | flags suspicious online-shopping payments before you send them | Prevention aid, not a guarantee — does not itself change your reimbursement rights if a scam gets through |
| Monzo | APP fraud reimbursement | n/a — legal requirement | up to £85,000, decision in 5–35 business days | Same exclusions as the PSR scheme; historically among the lowest reimbursement rates pre-2024 |
| Egidio | Detection and blocking | £29.99/yr | calls and 183+ messaging apps | does not reimburse — acts before the transfer is ever approved |

One comparison, using the confirmed figures above:
The mandatory excess vs. Egidio's annual cost
The £100 excess a bank can deduct from even a successful APP fraud claim, against Egidio's full annual subscription:
£100 (mandatory excess) vs. £29.99/yr for EgidioWhy we do this work
Someone who buys a smoke detector is entitled to more than a plastic box: to know how a fire starts, what to do in the first minutes, and what no device will do for them. That's the minimum owed to someone who trusts you with their safety.
This work — sourcing, verifying, publishing, correcting — is slow and demands discipline. It is within reach of every major player in this space: several are publicly traded companies with resources far beyond ours. If they don't do it, that isn't a question of resources. It's a choice.
At Egidio, the choice has been made. You're entitled to it, so you have it.

Frequently asked questions
Will my UK bank always reimburse me if I'm scammed?
Usually yes, but not automatically and not always in full. Since 7 October 2024, most UK banks and payment providers must reimburse victims of Authorised Push Payment (APP) fraud under mandatory Payment Systems Regulator rules — up to £85,000, with a possible £100 excess. Card payments, cash, cheques and international transfers fall outside this specific scheme. See the full breakdown →
Do Monzo and Starling reimburse scam victims as reliably as high-street banks?
Both are bound by the same mandatory PSR rules since October 2024. Before that, independent reporting found Monzo and Starling among the worst performers for APP fraud reimbursement rates, according to Payment Systems Regulator data covering 2022 — Monzo reimbursed roughly 22% and Starling roughly 37% of reported scam value that year. The 2024 rules apply equally to all participating providers now.
What is Lloyds' Scam Check tool and does it guarantee protection?
Scam Check is an AI feature embedded in the Lloyds app that reviews an online purchase — screenshots, seller details, price — before you pay a new payee, flagging signs like implausibly low prices or newly created seller accounts. It's a prevention aid, not a guarantee: it doesn't replace your own judgement, and it doesn't change your reimbursement rights if a scam still gets through.
Does Egidio replace my bank's fraud protection or my mobile network's scam filtering?
No. Egidio is not a bank, an insurer, or a reimbursement scheme. It does not process claims and does not replace any protection your bank or network already provides. It acts upstream — detecting and blocking the scam attempt itself, across calls and 183+ messaging apps — before any payment is even considered.
