The disappearance

Once payment is sent through an irreversible method, the scammer disappears and the property was likely never actually available.

How to spot it

What to do

  1. Book and pay only through the official platform — Airbnb protects your money until check-in if you stay on-platform.
  2. Verify the URL before entering any payment information.
  3. If you've already wired money, contact your bank or wire service immediately to attempt a recall.
  4. Report the listing to the platform and file a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
