The most common Twitch scams

Financial

The fake donation ("chargeback fraud")

A donation is made with a stolen credit card, then the fraudster asks the streamer to send part of it back in exchange. When the bank cancels the original donation, the streamer loses the full amount.

Hacking

The hijacked streamer account

A phishing link or a malicious extension allows a known account to be taken over, sometimes to post fake giveaways to the streamer's audience.

Fake giveaway

The impersonating channel

Channels reusing a known streamer's avatar and past broadcasts make people believe in a skin giveaway. The external link asks to enter credentials or authorize a "trade" — the items are then stolen.

Inflated audience

Follow-bot sellers

Services sell fake followers/views to streamers — actual fraud, not just a rule violation, which has already led to lawsuits.

In April 2025, streamer Kai Cenat's Twitch account (16.8 million followers) was hacked: profile photo and banner changed, a suspicious link added, account temporarily suspended before being restored. On a structural level, Twitch's H2 2025 transparency report shows that 97.17% of proactive enforcement actions target the "Spam, scams and fraud" category (phishing links, impersonation, fake accounts, donation fraud). Between H1 and H2 2024, these proactive actions rose by 134%. On the legal front, Twitch has already won cases against follow-bot sellers, ordered to pay roughly $1.4 million in 2018 for trademark infringement and fraud.
